WALES’ leading flat race jockey David Probert was in the limelight at Newmarket when piloting the 50/1 shot Tip Two Win to finish second in the 2,000 Guineas.

He’d won on the horse first time out last year and they’ve struck up a good partnership while being imaginatively campaigned through the winter in Qatar, winning two big races there. Lambourn trainer Roger Teal has done well to keep the horse in prime condition, travelling to and from the heat of the desert and coping with coming back here to bad weather alternating with unusually warm conditions.

Probert, who comes from Bargoed, enthused: “That was a massive performance. Roger and the team do such a great job with the horses to get them fresh and well.

"He’s had plenty of time in between his runs."

The Guineas winner, Saxon Warrior, looks above average and has the breeding to stay the Derby trip. He’s now 11/10 for the Epsom classic, and with no other obvious contenders yet it’s 14/1 bar.

Tip Two Win finished in front of a lot of other much more expensive bluebloods and Probert can look forward to riding him in the St James’ Palace at Royal Ascot. The Breeders Cup in the USA a long-range possibility.

Probert was in winning form at Chepstow the afternoon before, steering the moderate mare Ocean Gale to a surprisingly convincing victory.

Earlier that day the useful hurdler Coeur Blimey, switched to the flat, won over a mile and a quarter with Jamie Spencer on board.

The horse with the greatest potential at Friday’s meeting was the three-year-old Statuario, who won for the second time at Chepstow in good style. He may next be seen at Ascot’s Friday evening meeting.

Satchville Flyer was also a winner for David Evans over five furlongs, having looked utterly outpaced for most of the race. But he finished the strongest as the others slowed up on the soft ground to score for the third time at Chepstow and the tenth overall.

Evans took four horses to Guernsey on Monday, where Ochos Rios won and all the others finished in the frame. The track is a nine furlong right-handed circuit with tight turns, and as the trainer explained: “You need either a brave jockey or a thick one.”

The Grace Harris stable sent runners to two tracks on Monday and both won. Faint Hope belied his name when showing promise in a Ffos Las novice hurdle last month and at Kempton, pitched into a handicap, he was backed from 16s down to 9/1.

The season’s winning-most jockey Oisin Murphy was a significant booking for the yard’s lightly-raced filly Mooreoverthebridge at Bath. The combination was made 3/1 favourite and duly obliged.

Blaenau Gwent trainer Dai Burchell conjured a win out of his nine-year-old maiden Fact Flow at Uttoxeter on Saturday at odds of 66/1. This is the first horse that the Bill & Ben Partnership have had with Burchell and if they didn’t have any money on they’ll be a feeling a little weedy.

Englishman scored his third course and distance success over Windsor’s six furlong course on Monday. Milton Bradley’s eight-year-old last was down below his last winning mark, which was almost exactly a year ago at the Thames-side venue.

Chepstow race again on Tuesday evening. The meeting is sponsored by 188BET and tickets are available in advance for as little as £1.88.
