HISTORY repeated itself for Cwmbran’s Kyron Duke in Rio tonight as he finished fifth in the F41 shot put at a second successive Paralympic Games.

Duke’s best effort came in round two when he sent the shot out to 11.41m, a distance he was unable to better with his four remaining throws.

In the end he was nearly a metre off bronze medal winner Xia Zhiwei of China, who took third place with 12.33m.

The battle for gold was a clear two-horse race between world record holder Bartosz Tyszkowski of Poland and Germany’s Niko Kappel.

The Pole looked set to become the champion after a massive 13.56m in the third round, but Kappel had other ideas and snatched the gold with his penultimate throw.

Kappel only just did it though, his round five effort measuring one centimetre further than Tyszkowski’s best.

Duke has the javelin to come on Sunday when he will look to better the eighth place he achieved in London four years ago.
