ROBIN DAVEY SAYS: Our Joe is the legend

SO our Joe did it. He went to America, he exposed himself to the bright lights of Las Vegas and he took on the Executioner' and beat Bernard Hopkins in his own back yard. Some achievement!

Joe deserves all the accolades which are coming his way ... the best pound for pound boxer in the world, an all-time great, boxing immortality.

They are all medals to hang around his neck as he silenced, with his fists at least, one of the sport's biggest loudmouths.

As if he had not let his fists do the talking Joe also won over most of the Americans with his modest, magnanimous style while Hopkins fouled his way through the fight and couldn't find a word of praise for his opponent after it was all over.

Graceless and gracious in equal measures.

Hopkins is a busted flush while Calzaghe became a double world champion now out to take on and beat a triple champion in the legendary Roy Jones, probably in Joe's Millennium Stadium back yard.

At least Joe has the sense to realise it is, indeed, all coming to an end, the 36-year-old unwilling to go on past this year, refusing to take on one fight too many.

Rather he will give it one more go in a final super fight and then retire as an unbeaten world champion, 46 fights without a blemish, beating the best, even in America.

What a legacy!

A true sporting legend.

I was 1 of the fools who paid £25.99 to watch this fight on sky. Calzaghe did NOT deserve to win this fight, I reckon he should hang up his gloves, because if Hopkins can almost knock him out in first round, then Roy Jones will make mince meat out of him. Joe is a nice guy, but even he, if he has watched the fight he would know like the rest of us he didnt deserve to win

Frank Warren has tried to make a deal with RJJ several times in the past but he wanted too much money. Similarly, a deal was made with Hopkins 5/6 years ago but a day later he demanded twice the purse!

Calzaghe did deserve his victory. If American judges give the verdict to a foreigner then you can be sure he's won it convincingly. Anything close and history shows they're going to give it to their own guy. My grumble is with the referee; Hopkins threw himself to the canvas twice to earn a breather. Now if they were not foul blows, and the referee did not indicate that they were and the replays proved that they were not, the referee should have started counting. Either Hopkins would then have hopped up right away and Joe could have continued pounding him or if he was worn out, Joe would have got the KO he deserved.
