NEWPORT powerboat pair James Norvill and Charlie Parsons-Young are celebrating a remarkable double win.

The duo were crowned world champions after topping the podium at the P1 St Cloud Grand Prix of The Sea earlier this week, just two weeks after being crowned UK champions.

Driver Norvill and navigator Parsons-Young have been crossing the Atlantic all summer to compete in both the UK and USA P1 Championships.

The pair clinched the UK title earlier this month in Gosport, with a clean sweep of victories on the Solent in their GD Environmental Services race boat.

The double champions then went into the final round of the USA series with a slender three point lead.

The battle for the USA national title was fought out on East Lake Toho in Florida.

Norvill knew the race would be tense, exhilarating and possibly a dramatic event.

“It is one of my favorite race venues in the States, and it’s also my lucky venue where I had my first USA victory last year,” he said.

“Typically the race is flat and that suits me and Charlie. It’s a great feeling to win both and become world champions.”

Welsh entrepreneur Norvill is having quite a year, as away from the waters, he was named Institute of Directors’ Young Director of the Year in Wales.

He has also been shortlisted for the UK-wide Young Director of the Year category, the results of which will be announced in London next month.

“We’re lucky because we sponsor ourselves through James’ business GD Environmental,” said Parsons-Young.

“And we are our own bosses so we’ve got people looking after everything while we’re not there!”
