CWMBRAN darts player Nick Kenny caused a storm in Hull last weekend at the prestigious Winmau World Masters.

The 20-year-old put out legends of the game Tony O'Shea and Ted Hankey before meeting Scott Waites and Martin Adams in the stage TV finals.

He beat Waites – a former Masters and world champion – 3-1 to set up a last-16 clash with three-times former Masters and world champion Adams.

Their match became the story of the second day this and gripped the audience at the Hull City Hall with Kenny taking out 156 and 115 to win the first set.

Adams pulled the next set back and Kenny responded in kind winning the third. The fourth set was a nervy one, going to the final leg with both players feeling the tension and missing doubles. Adams just got there to level the game.

The crowd on the edge of their seats did not want the game to end but there sadly could only be one winner and that was Adams despite Kenny missing five darts to take what would have been an extraordinary win.

The Welshman said: "I was delighted to have qualified in the first place and to get as far as I did was just icing on the cake.

"I have been practicing hard since qualifying and all that hard work has paid off. Beating Tony and Ted, whom I have long admired was incredible and then to take on Scott Waites followed by the epic battle against Martin Adams will stay with me for a long time.

"I hope one day to play on the iconic Lakeside Stage and this is a good step towards that. I would like to continue on the BDO circuit and I am now looking for a sponsor who can help me fulfil that dream."

Kenny, who plays for Gwent and has represented Wales, earned his place by beating a strong field of 18 to 25-year-olds at the annual BDO Youth Festival of Darts.
