NEWPORT sprint star Mica Moore has added another trophy to her collection after being named Cardiff Metropolitan University athlete of the year.

The 21-year-old also won the prestigious President’s Award for female sprinter of the year at the Birchfield Harriers annual awards dinner last month.

The President’s Award, also known as the Daphne Arden Trophy, has previously been won by Olympic medallists Katharine Merry and Kelly Sotherton.

Moore is still on a high after helping the Welsh women’s 4x100m relay squad set a new national record at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The relay girls – Moore, 16-year-old Hannah Brier and Hannah Thomas and Rachel Johncock – finished seventh in the final at Hampden Park.

The young quartet beat an experienced Trinidad & Tobago team with a time of 44.51 seconds and Moore is already looking forward to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

“It’s been a great year and Glasgow was obviously the highlight,” said Moore.

“Nothing can beat the atmosphere at Hampden Park in the summer but the whole year has been good for me.

“Hopefully 2015 can as good or even better and I’ll be able to improve my personal best times.”

The former Newport Harriers 100m and 200m runner is not currently competing but she will continue training over the Christmas period ready for her first indoor race on January 11.

“I will be training so there will be no roast potatoes for me on Christmas Day,” she added.

“I’m working towards the indoor season and I have a Grand Prix event at UWIC on January 11 before the Welsh Indoor Championships and the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Indoors.

“Then it is the outdoors and I want to bring my times down and stay on top of the rankings.”

And long-term the aim is to represent Wales at the next Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018.

“The Gold Coast would be an amazing experience,” said Moore. “I’d love to get there and run as an individual as well as the relay but I know there is a lot of hard work to do before then.”
