NEWPORT sprint star Mica Moore is one of several Welsh athletes aiming to make their mark at this weekend’s Indoor British Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Glasgow 2014 sprinters Moore and Rachel Johncock and Delhi 2010 finalist Elaine O’Neill are part of a high quality field in the women’s 60m heats that also includes world junior 100m champion Dina Asher-Smith.

All three will be hoping to make a big impression after showing some good early season form, especially Johncock, who set a new 60m personal best while representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the recent international match in Glasgow.

World Junior Championships bronze medallist David Omoregie, from Haverfordwest, will be chasing his first senior Indoor British Championships title this weekend.

The rising hurdles star finished third last year behind Olympian Andy Pozzi and former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Will Sharman but both will be missing from this year’s event.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sally Peake will be favourite to take gold in the women’s pole vault on Saturday.

And Seren Bundy-Davies will also be among the favourites in the 400m after she smashed her indoor best at the Vienna Indoor International and was part of the winning women’s GB&NI 4x400m relay team at the Glasgow International.

World and Paralympic champion Aled Sion Davies joins fellow Team Wales Commonwealth Games athlete Gareth Winter in the senior men’s shot put.

Davies has already set a new F42 shot put world record this year and will continue his preparations for Rio 2016 by going up against some of the UK’s best able-bodied shot putters.

Also in the men’s field are Paul Walker, who was fifth at Glasgow 2014 in the pole vault, promising sprinters Dewi Hammond and Owen Smith and 3,000m runner Ieuan Thomas.

In the women’s field Bethan Davies will be among the leading contenders in the 3,000m race walk, while up-and-coming shot putter Adele Nicoll is one to watch and Melissa Courtney should go well in the women’s 1500m.

Newport’s Moore will also be back in Sheffield the following weekend for the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Nationals from February 20-22.
