NEWPORT Gwent Ladies Hockey Club members have just returned home following a successful first venture into the European Club Championships in Prague.

The team racked up two wins – against Nacka LHK (Sweden) and HC Imittos (Greece) – and two narrow defeats – against the hosts HC Praga 1946 and Post SV (Austria).

The team retained Wales’ position in the championships for next season and there was individual success for Rachel Hillier.

Playing at number nine, Hillier returned from the event as the third best goal scorer and notched a four-minute hat-trick in the first game against Nacka LHK.

Andrew Jones, club secretary and first team manager, said: “The club would like to pass on our sincere thanks to the squad for representing the club and Gwent in such a professional manner.

“Thanks also go out to family and friends who travelled to support the squad and lastly, but by no means least, a special note of thanks must go to local businessman Kyle Jones from spabreaksonline.co.uk, who came forward and sponsored two new kits, a requirement to take part in the Championships.
