FORMER Cross Keys rugby star Gerwyn Price is confident he can advance in the World MatchPlay darts tonight as he takes on world number 4 Adrian Lewis, writes Jordan Trott.

Debutant Price, known as The Iceman, is hoping to book a place in the quarter finals in Blackpool after knocking out Michael Smith in stunning fashion in the first round.

The former Keys hooker won the tie 10-4 after racing to a 5-0 lead. In what was a low scoring affair, Price’s finishing proved to be the key.

“I played in the World Championship where I scored quite well but missed my doubles and lost; today I didn't score as well but I hit my doubles and won so I prefer that” he said.

Lewis represents a new challenge for the man from Markham, however.

The double World Champion from Stoke-on-Trent averaged 99.06 on his way to victory against Joe Murnan this week.

But Price, who also had a stint at Pro12 side Glasgow Warriors, is not fazed by facing such a decorated opponent.

“I've got Adrian Lewis next but he we know what we're both capable of and if I can score and hit my doubles then I think can win the game" he said.

If The Iceman can progress he could end up facing Peter Wright. UK Open and Japan Darts Masters finalist Wright, put in the performance of the roun d by saveraging 108.13 against Belgium’s Kim Huybrecths.

Also in Price’s half of the draw is world number 1 Michael van Gerwen. The Dutchman takes on Carmarthen’s Jamie Lewis, hoping he can eradicate the memory of last year’s final defeat at the hands of Phil Taylor.

The pair also faceoff this evening with Lewis hoping he can build on his victory against Justin Pipe. The 23 year-old edged past the veteran Pipe to earn a shot against the 2014 World Champion.

Adrian Lewis versus Gerwyn Price is live on Sky Sports 1 tonight from around 10.40pm.
