NEWPORT sprinter Katie-Jane Priest has been named in the Wales under-20 team for tonight’s Welsh Athletics Outdoor International in Cardiff.

The 18-year-old Newport Harriers athlete, won two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m at the Welsh Athletics Championships in Cardiff last month, runs in the 100m and the 4x100m relay.

Joint senior 100m record holder Hannah Brier will also run the relay and the 200m at the meeting, which sees Wales U20s go head-to-head with rivals from England South, England North and England Midlands.

The 17-year-old recently equalled Sallyanne Short and Elaine O’Neill’s Welsh 100m record of 11.39 seconds in her heat at the World Youth Championships in Cali, before going on to finish sixth in the final.

Priest and Brier are joined in the Wales team by Emily Wright, who came agonisingly close to winning a medal at the World Youth Championships, finishing just 1cm short of third place in the long jump to end in fourth.

She will start as favourite in the long jump and is likely to face strong competition from England South U20’s Simi Fajemisin.

Fresh from extending her Welsh U20 shot put record to 15.55m at the European Junior Championships in Sweden this month, Adele Nicoll has been selected to throw in the shot put and discus.

Bronwen Owen, who also impressed while representing GB & NI at the European Juniors finishing sixth in the 5000m final, will be looking to take that good form in to the 1500m.

Wales U20 hammer record holder Jac Palmer has twice thrown over 70m this season but will hope to get the better of England South U20’s Taylor Campbell, who has a personal best of 78.74m set this season.

In addition to the feature U20 international a number of senior athletes will also be competing as guests, including Welsh discus record holder Brett Morse and two-time Commonwealth Games representative Matthew Richards in the hammer.
