CAERLEON'S Georgia Rowe turned her Netball World Cup into 15 minutes of fame on Sunday as she bagged 12 goals from 12 shots to ensure Wales go into the top half of the tournament in the second phase.

The 20-year-old, 6ft 5in tall Cardiff Metropolitan University undergraduate was unleashed in the final quarter of Wales' 71-44 win over Zambia in Sydney, taking over from close friend Chelsea Lewis.

And Rowe delivered another faultless display up front as Wales made it two wins from two games in the preliminary round.

Coming on top of Newport-born Emma Thomas’ perfect 28 goals from 28 shots in the opening day win over Fiji it was another important contribution from a Welsh shooter.

Thomas and Lewis had laid the groundwork in the first 45 minutes against Zambia by pushing Wales into a 57-44 lead before Rowe joined another World Cup debutant, Sarah Bell upfront.

The 24-year-old Thomas, at her second World Cup, netted 12 goals from 13 attempts to take her tournament tally to 41 goals from 42 shots for a 98% success rate, while Lewis added another 44 goals from 49 shots to take her shooting accuracy figure to 85% as she took her goal total to 75 from 88 attempts.

The win means Suzy Drane’s side will meet unbeaten Uganda live on Sky Sports (8.20am) tomorrow morning to decide who wins Pool D.

Wales finished ninth at the last World Cup in Singapore so are guaranteed a higher finish this time after their opening two victories.

“This win sets us up for a top of the table clash against Uganda,” said Welsh Netball’s head of elite performance Trish Wilcox.

"Although the team did take the first quarter to settle against an unorthodox but agile style of play by the Zambian team, we were really pleased we came out of the first-half with a healthy 15 goal lead.

“Changes in the defence end for the third quarter did not disrupt the defensive pressure and we kept the intensity high to extend the lead going into the last quarter. This enabled us to finish the game having all players take the court in this world cup."
