CWMBRAN’S Kyron Duke claimed a bronze medal in the F41 javelin final at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

The 23-year-old, who has achondroplasia, threw a season’s best 37.99m to finish third behind Kovan Abdulraheem of Iraq and Chinese winner Pengxiang Sun.

Sun set a new world record of 43.67m to win the gold medal but Duke was happy with bronze after failing to post a throw on the leader board in the shot put on Saturday, finishing ninth in the final.

Duke is a veteran of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and has also represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

He won silver in the javelin and bronze in the shot put at the 2013 IPC World Championships in Lyon and bronze in the javelin in Christchurch two years earlier.

His older cousin Gareth Duke also has the same condition and represented Great Britain as a swimmer in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.

Chepstow sprinter Jenny McLoughlin also missed out on a medal in her first event in Doha.

The 24-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, came through her heat in the T37 100m in third place in a time of 14.40 seconds.

But McLoughlin posted a time of 14.41 in the final to finish fifth.

Fellow Brits Kadeena Cox and Georgina Hermitage won gold and silver respectively.

McLoughlin has previously won silver in the T37 100m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and bronze in the 4x100m relay at the 2011 IPC World Championships and at London 2012.

In Doha she also goes in the T37 200m tomorrow and the sprint relay on Saturday – the final day of the competition.
