WHO says you have to put your feet up when you reach retirement age?

Newport Harriers athlete Glyn Sutton will celebrated his 71st birthday next month but he’s certainly not taking life easy.

The septuagenarian sprinter has made a habit of breaking records on the tracks since moving into the ‘veteran’ categories.

Sutton is the man to beat from the over-35s to the over-70s at 100m and 200m in the Harriers hall of fame with top times stretching all the way back to 1983.

And in 2016 he’s still going strong – setting a new world record for ‘Master 70’ men over 60m not once but twice.

Sutton equalled the world's best time at the Cardiff Met Open in January and then made the record for this age group his own in February at Lee Valley, where he crossed the line in 8.12 seconds.

And, with the benefit of some sun on his back, he loosened up the muscles and powered to a new world record of 8.09 seconds in Ancona, Italy, last week.

Sutton holds British records for 60m, 100m and 200m in the Master 70, Master 65 and Master 60 age categories and some of these times are also world bests.

He was also a very good pole vaulter and is ranked in the top three in Britain at Master 50, 60 and 65 age categories.

His last pole vault competition was in 2013 and it seems unlikely that he will compete in that event again but there’s no stopping him on the track.

Ken Goodger, honorary secretary at Newport Harriers Athletic Club, said: “Glyn is a long and loyal servant to Newport Harriers and a credit to his sport and the city of Newport.”
