NEWPORT sprinter Mica Moore is delighted to be back on track after a “scary” illness ruined her 2015 outdoor season.

The 23-year-old helped the Welsh women’s 4x100m relay squad set a new national record in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games final.

But her 2015 season was a washout after she was struck down by a virus following a training camp in America 12 months ago.

“I had something very similar to glandular fever and it wiped me out for the whole season. It was horrible,” said Moore.

“It started when I was training in Arizona this time last year.

“I came back and I just felt really flat – I had no power at all and then I started getting muscle spasms and lots of lactic acid.

“I never usually get that and it was quite scary but I’m back to normal now and feeling much more positive about the year ahead.

“If anything the experience has made me more hungry to succeed.”

And the former Newport Harrier, who now competes for Birchfield Harriers and Cardiff Metropolitan University, has started her 2016 in encouraging form.

At the recent BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championships in Bedford she won bronze medals in both the 100m final (in 11.92 seconds) and the 200m final (in 24.78 seconds).

And in her 100m semi-final she recorded a time of 11.87 seconds.

“I’m really happy,” said Moore. “Last year was not my greatest with illness and injuries and I’m really keen to get back on track this year.

“Running 11.87 shows that all the hard work I’ve been doing in training is paying off and I’m hoping to clock quicker times throughout the summer.

“And I’ve started running the high hurdles as well,” she added.

“I’m really enjoying it and learning a new skill is always good.”

Moore is hoping to make the Wales team once again for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast.

But her next big event should be the Loughborough International Athletics on Sunday, May 22.

Moore hopes to be selected for the Welsh relay team at the Paula Radcliffe Athletics Stadium.

Welsh Athletics selections for the event will take place on Monday, with the team to be announced on Wednesday, May 18.
