CHARLOTTE Carey’s parents have had to use their spare room to accommodate all of the teenager’s table tennis trophies and medals – and they could be adding more to the collection this weekend.

The Welsh Championships take place in Cardiff today and tomorrow, with Ebbw Vale’s Carey bidding to increase her clutch of more than 20 national titles by another three.

She goes for glory in the women’s under-21 and senior singles events as well as the mixed doubles alongside partner Dan O’Connell – the duo are seeking their fourth championship as a pairing.

Tredegar’s Chloe Thomas shone in both singles competitions last year but isn’t able to defend her titles this time around due to playing commitments in Sweden.

Carey, ranked third in the UK, will be a strong favourite to scoop yet more domestic prizes, and she goes into the competition buoyed by some positive news.

As of next season she will ply her trade with German outfit ESV Weil, a club based a stone’s throw from the Rhine River and the border with Switzerland.

That, together with strong displays at Grand Prix events in Doncaster and Blackpool, and a useful week’s training in Ireland, means Carey is ready to impress at the Sport Wales National Centre.

“It’s a pretty difficult event because we all know each other’s games well and anyone can beat anyone on the day,” she said.

“I won the women’s doubles and mixed doubles last year but couldn’t defend the singles titles, so I’ll be trying to get them back this time and win the mixed again with Dan.

“We’ve won it three times before and beat a really good Irish team in the final in Blackpool.

“Me and Dan started playing in the same place and know each other pretty well now.

“Both our grandfather’s played together and they are coming down to watch us this weekend.”

All of the junior events at the Welsh Championships are played today while the seniors take to the tables tomorrow.

Matches are played throughout both days and the public can view the action in Sophia Gardens for free.
