CWMBRAN archer Dave Phillips has achieved his Olympic dream after being selected in the Paralympics GB team for Rio.

Phillips, a former member of the British junior squad, headed back to Llantarnam Archery Club when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

He won team recurve European champion in 2014 and now the 50-year-old has been named as part of a 10-strong squad for the Games in September.

He said: “I can hardly believe that this is happening to me – it is a dream come true!

“I have only returned to archery in the last couple of years after a 30-year break and I have been enjoying my international competition since then.

“I was hugely inspired by London 2012 and my the public’s appreciation and support of disabled athletes, and I hope that the public will show us their support once again when we go out to compete this September in Rio.

“I am so proud to say I will be representing Paralympics GB on the biggest stage for disabled athletes in the world, and I can’t wait.

“I’d like to thank Wales Disability Sport and my advisor (retired Paralympian) Pippa Britton for providing me with so much support.”

GB squad: John Cavanagh, Jo Frith, Jodie Grinham, Mikey Hall, Nathan Macqueen, Tania Nadarajah, David Phillips, Jess Stretton, John Stubbs, John Walker.
