DARREN Morgan has added yet another title to his collection after becoming the International Billiards & Snooker Federation’s (IBSF) world six reds champion in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

The Newbridge veteran won nine matches before beating Hong Kong’s Chau Man Hon 6-4 in the final, as he followed in the footsteps of fellow Welshman Duane Jones, winner of the event in 2013.

Morgan’s success booked him a place at next month’s Six Red World Championship in Thailand, where he will take his place among the elite of snooker’s main tour.

Victory in Egypt is the latest in a long line of successes for Morgan since he dropped back down to the amateur ranks from the professional tour in 2006.

World amateur champion in 1987, Morgan has been crowned world seniors and masters champion in the last decade, while he also has several European masters titles to his name.

His triumph in Sharm el-Sheikh made up for a quarter-final exit in the team competition – Morgan was representing Wales alongside his brother Wayne.

Speaking about his success, he said: “My head was a bit frazzled after losing with my brother in the team event, but after winning a few matches in the singles I was totally focused on the title.

“I played really consistently throughout the tournament and winning it was unbelievable.

“It’s nice to have it on my CV, and as I reached the semi-finals I’ve got an automatic entry for Thailand.”

He added: “I also have to say how nice the people were in Egypt and what a great venue it was.

“People might think Sharm el-Sheikh is not safe but we all felt perfectly safe out there.

“Those who didn’t go there missed an unbelievable trip.”

The Six Red World Championship, which takes place in Bangkok from September 5-10, is an event that Morgan has played in before.

Home favourite Thepchaiya Un-Nooh is the reigning champion following his defeat of Liang Wenbo in last year’s final.

Like the IBSF’s version, players start off in groups before the competition progresses to a straight knockout format.

Morgan already knows that his six-man group features 2015 Crucible champion Stuart Bingham, Pontycymer’s Ryan Day and former two-time world semi-finalist James Wattana.
