MARK Williams has warned his Coral Scottish Open rivals that his best form is yet to come to the table after scraping his way into this evening’s last 16 with a deciding-frame victory over Stephen Maguire, writes Ross Lawson.

Breaks of 52 and 110 sent Cwm's Williams through against the home favourite in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, and he is now set to face Mark Davis tonight for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Welsh Potting Machine lived up to his name in exemplary style early on, but Maguire held his own to take the game to an all-or-nothing rubber, a break of 56 drawing him level.

But Williams, still looking for his first major ranking final of the season heading into the Christmas break, held his nerve for his season’s 30th win.

“I played alright, made a couple of good breaks, but it’s the same old thing, the cushions are becoming a real problem,” the world number 15 conceded.

“I’ve had a couple of good games, but I’m only into the last 16, there’s still a long way to go and there’s a lot of work still to be done.

“I’m just happy to still be in, confidence is alright and I’m getting a little bit of rhythm going, but it’s not been any more impressive than that so far so it can get better."

Williams won’t be joined in the fourth round by fellow Welshman Daniel Wells however, whose Coral Scottish Open run came to a halt at the hands of Yu De Lu.

An inability to build breaks reared its head for Wells, though his dogged resilience pulled the game back to 3-3.

But a scintillating 103 clinched the match for Yu, leaving the world number 66 with little complaints after having the rub of the green earlier in the competition.

“I’m disappointed, it wasn’t a good quality match and my scoring was way below par,” he said.

“You can’t expect to keep winning when you do that. I’ve been fortunate so far but you get found out eventually, but Yu’s done brilliantly to wrap it up in that last frame.

“It’s been a problem for months. I’ve changed my cue and feel like I’m getting better but my cue ball control is not as good as it was so I need to work over Christmas.

“Results are getting better though, so if I can blend it all together I’ll have a good new year.”
