COLEG Gwent student and Newport Harriers star Kellen Jones won a bronze medal at a prestigious inter-school athletics event in Ireland.
Jones, who studies sport at Coleg Gwent’s Usk campus, took part in the U18 International SIAB (Schools International Athletics Board) Combined Event at the Athlone International Arena.
The competition is an indoor pentathlon consisting of 60m hurdles, shot put, long jump, 200m and 800m.
The Gwent youngster delivered strong performances in each category but it was in the hurdles that he really excelled, running a personal best of 8.33 seconds.
College lecturer Kelly Cook said: “All of his tutors are extremely proud of Kellen for achieving a bronze medal representing Wales in the U18 International SIAB Combined Event.
“He is a great athlete with a bright future ahead of him and we wish him the best of luck for upcoming events. Well done Kellen.”
SIAB is made up of representatives from the Schools’ Athletic Associations of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and holds a number of elite competitions each year.
