MICA Moore’s bobsleigh career took another turn for the better when she and driver Mica McNeill clinched gold at the Junior World Championships in Winterberg, Germany.

Newport 24-year-old Moore and McNeill, who partnered Montell Douglas to Europa Cup gold on the same track two days previously, took first place with a time of one minute 53.96 seconds.

They finished nearly six-tenths of a second ahead of Germany's Anna Koehler and Franziska Fritz, with another German pair, Kim Kalicki and Lisa-Sophie Gericke in third.

The two Mica’s only joined forces for the first time at the start of the season, yet the triumph in Winterberg gave them their medal tally to four.

Victory at the Junior World Championships proceeded two silvers and a bronze on the North American Cup circuit last November.

Great Britain’s previous world junior success had come in February 2011 when Paula Walker and Rebeka Wilson took gold in Park City, Utah.

“It’s a massive result for Great Britain Bobsleigh and the women’s programme, and it’s one that these athletes should be very proud of,” said Lee Johnston, lead coach for GB Bobsleigh at the Junior World Championships.

“Both Micas performed when it really mattered and to beat the Germans in their own backyard is a real boost.

“That’s not easy to do but they produced two consistent runs, kept their cool under pressure and executed what they’d been practicing in training.

“They’ve worked very hard in preparation for this event and it’s great to see that hard work pay off.”

He added: “Having been with Mica (McNeill) from the start of her bobsleigh career prior to the 2012 Youth Olympics, it’s great to see her progressing like this.

“It’s been a great week for the women with Mica and Montell winning the Europa Cup race on Thursday, and it should be a real confidence boost moving forward.”

McNeill won Youth Olympics silver alongside British long jumper Jazmin Sawyers five years ago and claimed world junior bronze with Niki McSweeney in 2012.

Moore, the latest in a growing list of sprinters to take up bobsleigh, represented Wales in the 4x100m relay at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The former Newport Harriers ace is targeting a special double in 2018, with her goal to run at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and partner McNeill at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
