CHARLOTTE Carey’s World Table Tennis Championships are over after she was knocked out of the women’s singles in Dusseldorf.

The Ebbw Vale ace was beaten 4-1 by home favourite Kristin Silbereisen in the first round of the main draw yesterday.

Germany’s Silbereisen surged into a two-set lead before Carey gave herself hope, winning the third 11-7.

But multiple Welsh champion Carey couldn’t continue her comeback and Silbereisen secured sets four and five to progress.

Carey had set up a meeting with the 32-year-old thanks to a flawless performance in the preceding group stage.

A pair of 4-0 victories, over Lebanon’s Talia Azar and the Dominican Republic’s Esmerlyn Castro, saw the Gwent star finish top of her pool.

In the mixed doubles, Carey won two matches with playing partner Daniel O’Connell to reach the last 64.

They overcame Philippines duo Jann Mari Nayre and Rizumu Ono 3-1 and then beat Ficky Santoso and Gustin Dwijayanti of Indonesia 3-2.

However, Sweden’s Mattias Karlsson and Matilda Ekholm proved too strong for them, with the Welsh team losing 4-0.

Carey and Tredegar’s Chloe Thomas, who arrived in Germany late because of travel disruption, fell at the first hurdle in the women’s doubles.

They suffered a 3-1 reverse against India’s Ayhika Mukherjee and Madhurika Patkar.

Thomas was unable to make the singles main draw.
