KYRON Duke will return to the scene of his Paralympic Games debut next month after being included in the Great Britain squad for the IPC World Championships.

The Cwmbran athlete, who goes for gold in the F41 shot put, is part of a 49-strong team featuring the likes of Jonnie Peacock, Hannah Cockroft and Richard Whitehead.

Duke already has four medals – three bronze and one silver – from previous world championships in Christchurch (2011), Lyon (2013) and Doha (2015).

He gets the chance to claim that elusive gold when the London Stadium, the venue for the athletics during the 2012 Paralympics, hosts the event between July 14 and 23.

The 24-year-old finished fifth in the shot put at London 2012 before repeating the feat when he became a two-time Paralympian in Rio last September.

Meanwhile, Peacock will be aiming to reclaim the T44 100m gold medal he won in 2013 after missing the championships two years ago through injury.

While Cockroft is the hot favourite in the sprinting events, having claimed gold in the T34 100m, 400m and 800m in Doha, before repeating the same treble in Rio.

In all, the British squad for London, which picked up 31 medals in Doha, features 21 medallists from Brazil.

Richard Whitehead, bidding to clinch his fourth world gold in the T42 200m, is also included, as is Kadeena Cox, who will be out to recapture the T37 100m gold she won two years ago.

Six-time champion David Weir is a notable absentee after saying in January he would never race for Britain again following a row with coach Jenni Banks.

Libby Banks, a double Paralympic champion in the T11 100m and 200m, has also missed out on the squad as she is injured.

Britain’s para-athletics head coach Paula Dunn said: “We have selected a very strong team for London and I’m delighted to see so many medallists from Rio lining up alongside some new faces at senior level.

“Having a home world championship is very special for all the athletes, coaches and team staff, so we are all very honoured to be representing the British team this summer.

“We have selected five athletes who topped the podium at the Paralympic Games in 2012, so they have valuable experience of a home championship.

“I expect the British public will throw their support behind the team once more, and our team will create some unforgettable memories for them once again in the London Stadium.”
