PROFESSIONAL Darts Corporation (PDC) star Wes Newton was the winner of the inaugural Neon Newport Masters.

Newton, from Blackpool, overcame PDC compatriot Robert Owen in a close final at The Neon in Newport city centre thanks to a superb 103.67 average.

And Newton nearly pulled off a magical nine-dart finish in the second leg before claiming victory.

Both men reached the final after coming through tough semi-finals against Cwmbran qualifier Nathan Treadgold and the world number 29 Justin Pipe.

Speaking to PDC official Huw Ware, Newton said: “Events like this are not possible without the hard work of the organisers and an incredible crowd like the one we had.

“The audience created an unbelievable atmosphere and I’m looking forward to returning to defend my title in 2018.”

The tournament also featured Welshmen Barrie Bates and Craig Gilchrist, as well as Jon Worsley and a host of other players who came through qualifying events around the region.

A huge thanks have gone to joint organiser Worsley, Scott Gibling, Linda and Huw Ware, Dean Williams, Shelley and Andy Byers, all the staff at the Neon and the amazing crowd that made the first Neon Newport Masters a huge success.
