A CAPACITY crowd at the Newport Centre had much to celebrate as they witnessed another clean sweep for Gwent fighters taking part in a thrilling Cage Warriors 87, writes Jason Batty.

The Cage Warriors promotion again delivered an action-packed fight card which fulfilled all expectations and produced a spectacular show full of exciting finishes.

Making his professional debut was ex-professional boxer and Celtic Pride combatant Mason Jones who faced a resilient Shaun Luther in a lightweight contest.

Jones continually smothered his opponent, battering him with a superior jab and controlling the centre of the octagon throughout.

After an unsuccessful rear naked choke attempt in the second round, Jones went for the same move in the third.

This time he got it right until his opponent tapped out to give the talented Blaenavon native his maiden pro win.

Tillery Combat’s Kris ‘Evil’ Edwards secured a second consecutive victory after a lengthy lay off when he took on Bryan Creighton in what was the former’s 19th professional contest.

A cut above the eye of the Welshman from a brutal exchange in the first round did little to hamper his desire to get the finish.

The second round saw both fighters engage and hit the canvas in a grappling battle which saw Edwards emerge victorious after tying his opponent up in a body triangle before winning by rear naked choke.

Teammate and rising star Jack Shore again lived up to expectations and preserved his unbeaten record with a third round KO of Italian Mattia Galbiati.

Shore had dispatched all of his previous five opponents with submissions, but on the night the young fighter showcased his versatility and striking tools.

As soon as the octagon door closed Shore initiated every attack, dropping his opponent in the first round with a powerful left hand.

Never looking in any danger throughout, the Italian survived every onslaught until the third round when a devastating knee sent him crashing to the canvas.

That was enough for the referee to stop the bout and see Shore pick up another victory.

Cage Warriors returns to Newport next year when Tillery Combat’s Josh Reed takes on Switzerland’s Marko Kovacevic on March 3.

Meanwhile, on a Sanigar Events boxing show in Merthyr Tydfil, there were points wins for St Joseph’s duo Gavin Gwynne and Fred Evans.

Lightweight Gwynne and super-welterweight Evans took their pro records to 7-0 and 2-0 respectively with defeats of Fonz Alexander and Victor Edagha.

There was also a win for Tredegar middleweight Ricky Rowlands (2-1) who outpointed Jordan Grannum.

St Joes pair Mitch Buckland and Lance Cooksey will be joined by Pontypool's Kieran Gething and Pontllanfraith's Kody Davies, who makes his pro debut, on a show in Swansea this Saturday.
