BLACKWOOD back David James has been tipped to earn a Super League contract after scoring a try on his Wales debut.

The South Wales Scorpions utility back crossed the whitewash and was named as his country’s man of the match in the 28-16 loss to France in Wrexham at the weekend.

It led to coach Iestyn Harris, a dual-code international, to state: “David looked exceptional at the back. He looked sharp and a real threat – I think there’s potential there with him to play in Super League.”

That would be a remarkable achievement for the 26-year-old who came through the ranks playing union at Blackwood in Division One and had brief spells in the Premiership with both Cross Keys and Newport.

But James, a rapid and elusive runner, is just pleased to have made an impression on his international bow.

“It was delighted to score a try on my Wales debut,” he said.

“My parents were there watching so it was a real honour for me to play and score for my country.

“I thought I could have played a bit better but if people thought I was man of the match then great! I would have swapped that for a win though.

“It’s back to reality for me and back to my day job now. I’ve just been getting on with it but it was a really good week with Wales despite not winning at the end.

“We were in camp from last Wednesday. I’ve taken a lot of positives out of the whole experience and I learned a lot of things from Iestyn Harris and the coaches.

“Hopefully I can bring them into the Scorpions now and improve my game.”

James will try and help the Neath-based Scorpions enjoy a strong finish to the Co-operative Championship campaign.
