Dragons chasing ex-England ace Andy Goode

NEWPORT Gwent Dragons are in talks to sign ex-England fly-half Andy Goode.

The 32-year-old’s contract with Worcester runs out at the end of the season and the region believe the prolific points scorer could be just the solution to their problems at 10.

The Argus understands they are attempting to convince Goode to sign up and that the 17-times capped fly-half, who lives in Cheltenham, has visited Rodney Parade for talks.

The Dragons have struggled at 10 this season, seeing close matches slip through their fingers because of missed kicks and frequently coming off second best in battles for territory.

The young pair of Lewis Robling and Steffan Jones failed to fire in the first half of the campaign, leading to full-back Dan Evans moving forward with mixed success.

With a raft of young talent in the backs and a burgeoning pack, the Dragons believe they need an experienced fly-half to guide them around the paddock and kick his goals.

Goode ticks those boxes while another option is ex-Wales fly-half Nicky Robinson, who is also out of contract and could be a part of a fly-half merry-go-round.

Welsh-qualified Joe Carlisle has been linked with a move from Worcester to Wasps and it remains possible that the pair could swap clubs Another element in the mix is that Wasps are monitoring Dragons’ fly-half Jones along with London Welsh, who made enquiries about taking him on loan.

The 22-year-old was the match-winner against the Ospreys in the LV= Cup last weekend with six kicks from six but has been in and out of the side and may head elsewhere when his contract expires at the end of the season.

But what is certain is that the Dragons, whose average age in the three-quarters last Saturday was 21, will add an experienced fly-half to their roster this summer and their prime target is Goode.

The 32-year-old is second in the all-time Aviva Premiership points chart behind Charlie Hodgson, was part of a Leicester side that won four titles and two Heineken Cups and won 17 caps.

This would be a great signing in my view. Goode was one of the best northern hemisphere 10's of the last ten years. Hugely underrated by England but at club level he's been one of the best.

We must keep hold of Steffan jones. He will be fantastic once he's matured a bit. Goode and Steffan as understudy would put us in a great position. All we need now is Swayne Peele to help mentor Jonathan evans and well be flying.

Just the type of player the Dragons need. Won't miss games due to internationals, experienced, confident, steady and can pass on this to our young players. A definite for me.

This would be one of the signings we need to right the ship. Super choice, don't care how much he wants, give it to him, he is worth it for the next two years, especially if we can keep Lewis and/or Steffan.
Nick Robinson would also do nicely (Cearleon boy) similar sort of player but maybe too used to playing behind "going forward" packs now.
The front row is getting better, but its at least another season away from being competitive in my opinion, and no real depth. So how are all those dog rough Romanian front rows doing these days? They didn't have a lot of skill, but they had strength AND a ton of 'Skank", which really upset the opposition.

Did our new Rugby consultant have anything to do with this?
Just a thought.............

Goode would be a good signing yes but not the long term answer. He can help our youngsters along and give us a bit of robust leadership in attack, hope he does come to us. The youngsters must also be retained and £300k extra money should help on that front. One or two will leave this year or next so why not se the money this frees up to give Toby a good pay rise to keep him and with Coombsy being tipped for a Wales start things are looking better for next season.

I think you'll find there will be. Cast your mind back to Tony Brown's very 'public' statement. Okay he wasn't specific in what positions would be targeted, but he wouldn't because by and large that's the coach's role, now ably assisted by Dean Ryan, but the money is now there. It's important you consider that TB doesn't make a great deal of 'public' announcements. So when he does it's best you sit up and listen. As for Andy Goode, yes a good interim recruitment if he accepts.
