NEWPORT Gwent Dragons enjoyed a night to remember in Paris on Saturday night but Jason Tovey wasn’t a part of it after another passport mishap – and this time he couldn’t blame his dog.

The 25-year-old was initially named on the bench for the region’s European Rugby Challenge Cup opener against Stade Francais.

But the fly-half put his passport through the wash and couldn’t travel to France, forcing the region to issue a late SOS to Geraint Rhys Jones with Tovey taking his place in the Cross Keys side that took on Bedford in the British and Irish Cup.

Luckily it didn’t prove to be a costly error for the Dragons because 20-year-old fly-half Angus O’Brien had a stormer at Stade Jean Bouin, scoring 18 points in the stunning 38-22 win and pinning their hosts back with some delightful kicking out of hand.

Scrum-half Richie Rees said: “I thought Angus was superb, he kicked to the corners when we needed him to and he played when we needed him to.

“He performed on the big stage – and it doesn’t get much bigger than Paris on a Saturday night against Stade Francais.”

Tovey missed Cardiff Blues’ Heineken Cup clash with Toulon in 2013 when his puppy, Buster, ate his passport.

He will be back in contention for a place on the bench against Newcastle at Rodney Parade on Friday, although he could also stay with Keys for their trip to Cornish Pirates on Sunday.
