DIRECTOR of rugby Lyn Jones heaped the praise on Hallam Amos after his stunning performance helped Newport Gwent Dragons qualify for the European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-finals, declaring the Wales winger is blessed with the same match-winning qualities as Shane Williams.

The Dragons won a Euro encounter on English soil for the first time on Saturday when they stunned Newcastle 40-29 at Kingston Park.

The six-try victory secured top spot in Pool Three and was earned by a well-balanced performance that saw the pack thrive at the driving lineout and the backs expressing themselves with ball in hand.

Teenage centre Tyler Morgan scored one try and caused the Falcons all manner of problems while Amos, 20, scored a pair of jaw-dropping tries.

"I was frightened watching us warm up about how young we were as a backline," said Jones. "I looked at Tom Prydie and he was the most experienced player we have got and he is only approaching 23.

"We went to Newcastle to put the ball through the hands and we saw what they can do. Tyler showed the potential he has and what a finish by Hallam (in the second half).

"They are small margins and that's what you need. That's what Shane Williams was good at and he would make the tiny margins count for a team and make the difference.

"As Dragons we need more players like Hallam in our team who can make the difference and make things happen."

The region may already be in the last eight but Amos wants to finish the job by making sure it's at Rodney Parade.

The Dragons need at least one match point from Saturday's game against Stade Francais to make sure the last-eight tie on the weekend of April 2 is in Newport.

"A home quarter-final would be huge but Stade Francais will be another tough game," said Amos, who is set to join Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Cuthbert and Liam Williams as back three options when Warren Gatland names his Six Nations squad on Tuesday morning.

"I've never played knockout rugby with the Dragons and it will be massive for us as a team, we are a young squad and the experience is only going to be good for us.

"Hopefully we can make it a home quarter-final and push into the semis and beyond."
