ELLIOT Frewen is desperate to play a starring role for Newport Gwent Dragons at the Singha Premiership 7s finals night at the Twickenham Stoop after getting the thumbs up for his stunning performance in the Welsh leg.

The Newport winger was named as player of the round after crossing for five tries as the Dragons triumphed against their regional rivals at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

It was the second year on the spin that the 28-year-old from Pencoed caught the eye in the capital but it came at a cost in 2014.

Frewen injured his right thumb and not only did the blow deny him the chance to play a part at the Stoop but it sidelined him until October.

"I dislocated my thumb, snapped all the ligaments and had an operation on the Wednesday a couple of days later," he said.

"I was gutted at missing the final because it was my big shot and a big opportunity gone so I am over the moon to get the chance of going this year."

The Dragons rallied from a last-gasp loss to the Scarlets to thump the Ospreys and Cardiff Blues to take the Welsh title.

This time they were toasting victory on points difference after being edged out in 2014 by the hosts, who were indebted to a controversial penalty try that salvaged a draw against the Dragons and top spot.

"We were gutted with the way that it ended last year so we were determined to go one better," said Frewen.

"For us to win it and for me to win player of the tournament, I am buzzing! Now we want to do the same at finals night.

"I thought that we gelled really well on Saturday considering that we only had two training sessions. Our first game against the Scarlets was scrappy but then we got into full flow against the Ospreys and settled down to play really well against Cardiff Blues.

"That gives us confidence. The boys just missed out in the final last year so hopefully we can go one step further, like we did in Cardiff, and come away with the trophy."

Frewen's sevens exploits meant that he missed Newport's opening match of pre-season at Rosslyn Park.

The Black and Ambers, without a host of first choice players, were downed 56-27 but the winger is confident that they will enjoy a fair better campaign than the miserable 2014/15 that saw them finish bottom of the Principality Premiership.

"I am really excited for the season," said Frewen. "Craig Warlow has done really well with the coaching and has brought some great boys in to strengthen the squad."

The Singha Premiership 7s finals night is on Friday, August 28. The 12 Aviva Premiership teams feature in tournaments in Gloucester, Coventry and Newcastle on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
