NEWPORT Gwent Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones has praised Aled Brew for his help in developing the next generation of Rodney Parade wingers.

The Wales international has left the Dragons after coming to an arrangement to end the final season of his three-year contract early.

The 30-year-old is reported to be heading to Aviva Premiership big guns Bath on trial in a bid to reignite his career after struggling to make an impact in his third spell at Rodney Parade.

He made just 12 appearances and failed to score a single try since his 2014 return from Biarritz.

Brew fell down the pecking order with Wales wing Hallam Amos making the 11 jersey his own while Ashton Hewitt had a breakthrough season down the right in 2015/16.

With Hewitt and Tom Prydie set to return very soon from shoulder and knee injuries respectively and new signing Pat Howard making a lively start to life at Rodney Parade following his arrival from Northampton, a deal was thrashed out to terminate the final year of his contract as the Dragons feel they have sufficient cover.

Centres Adam Hughes and Adam Warren are other options out wide while Wales Under-20s internationals George Gasson, Jared Rosser and Lloyd Lewis are the next crop coming through.

“Aled has been brilliant here and has been a brilliant mentor for the young players and passed on really positive messages, particularly with Ashton,” said head coach Kingsley Jones.

“But he felt it was time to move on and try something different. It was all mutual, he is a great guy and I wish him luck.

“It wasn’t about money and people don’t just walk away from contracts, we’ve come to an agreement and everyone has left on really good terms.”

The affable Brew is the leading try scorer in the Dragons history with most of his 43 scores coming in his devastating second period in Newport.

That earned him selection for the 2011 World Cup and he won the last of his nine caps against the Barbarians in 2012 before a big-money move to Biarritz.

BBC Sport reports that Brew will head to the West Country to try and earn a permanent deal at Bath, joining former teammates Taulupe Faletau and Luke Charteris and being coached by former Dragons boss Darren Edwards. The Rec side are yet to confirm any move.
