NEWPORT Gwent Dragons centre Tyler Morgan intends to use “the burn” of missing out on the Six Nations as motivation for his return to the Wales squad.

The 21-year-old from Caerleon is on a national dual contract but wasn’t one of the 36 players selected by Rob Howley for the tournament.

Morgan won two of his three caps at the 2015 World Cup, played for Wales against the Chiefs on their summer tour to New Zealand last summer and was named in the squad for the autumn internationals.

With time on his side, the Dragons centre has pledged to fight his way back into the reckoning with Scott Williams, Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts.

“I spoke to the Wales management and it’s understandable from them, I’ve got to earn my way in,” said Morgan.

“I knew beforehand that I wasn’t going to be involved and it gives me more motivation. I’ve got a point to prove.

“I knew that the NDC didn’t guarantee selection and this proves that point. It’s all on performances and I suppose this makes a bit of an example as well to other boys in Wales that you have to perform to get in the squad.

“I just know that going back to watching it on TV and not being involved in the camp will burn. That’s increasing the hunger now.”

Morgan endured an injury hit 2015/16 after dislocating his right shoulder in the World Cup quarter-final defeat to South Africa.

He made just six regional appearances but this season he has played 15 times for the Dragons, two shy of the tally he set two years ago in his first full campaign with the seniors.

“The Wales management want me to carry on playing and don’t want to mess with my schedule,” said Morgan, who has started in five of the last six games.

“Last year was difficult for me but I think that I’ve been improving this season and getting better each game.

“I’ve got to stay on an upward curve. I’m still only 21 so I’m not in any rush to break through just yet, I just want to get more experience.

“I am just happy to be playing and chuffed to be injury free. I am learning game on game.”
