NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have signed former South Africa full-back Zane Kirchner.

The 32-year-old, who won 31 caps for the Springboks after making his Test debut against the British and Irish Lions in 2009, will head to Rodney Parade from Guinness PRO12 rivals Leinster in the summer.

Kirchner has spent the last four seasons in Dublin and will stay in European rugby to help the development of the Dragons’ burgeoning back three talent.

The former Blue Bulls speedster, who can also play on the wing and in midfield, is relishing a fresh challenge.

He said: “When looking at the current squad, the average age and talent within the region, that is what got me interested.

“I am keen to find my feet, settle in with boys as quickly as possible, and add value to the squad where I can. I believe the Dragons will definitely move in the right direction!”

Kirchner will join compatriots Brok Harris, Rynard Landman, Sarel Pretorius, Pat Howard and Carl Meyer in the Dragons ranks.

He continued: “New decisions and ventures aren’t always easy to make, however the experience of moving to Leinster, my first move abroad, has helped and knowing a few of the other South Africans in the squad makes my decision easier.”

Kirchner will battle for spots in the back three with Meyer, Howard, Wales ace Hallam Amos, Ashton Hewitt, Adam Hughes and Adam Warren while also mentoring bright prospects Lloyd Lewis, Will Talbot-Davies, George Gasson and Jared Rosser.

“I am delighted to welcome Zane to the Dragons. His experience both on and off the field will be invaluable for this young squad,” said head coach Kingsley Jones.

“In addition to his experience, he understands how to win having played a major part in Super Rugby, international rugby and through helping Leinster secure the Guinness PRO12 title in 2014.

“He is a great addition to our young back line and I believe he will bring a much-needed voice in the backs to help these youngsters with their development.”
