Tovey set for Blues move

Tovey set for Blues move Tovey set for Blues move

FLY-HALF Jason Tovey is set to leave Newport Gwent Dragons this summer and join Welsh rivals Cardiff Blues.

The 22-year-old from Cwmcarn is out of contract at the end of the season and the Argus understands that he will head to the capital on a three-year deal.

Tovey came through the Dragons Academy and has scored 535 points in 88 regional appearances.

The left-footer has been on the fringes of the international side on a number of occasions, most recently when he was named in Wales’ 45-man World Cup training squad last July His outside hopes of a surprise place in Warren Gatland’s travelling party for New Zealand were ended by a back injury.

Former Wales Under-20s star Tovey will hope to take the next step by making the same short move west as Ceri Sweeney, who left the Dragons in 2008.

The Blues have struggled at fly-half since the departure of Nicky Robinson with Sweeney, Australian import Sam Norton-Knight and Scotland’s Dan Parks, who is out of contract this summer, all failing to convince.

The Dragons were already in the market for an experienced number 10 and that hunt will now intensify.

Bright prospect, Cross Keys outside-half Steffan Jones starts tonight’s LV= Cup clash with the Ospreys in Bridgend while the region yesterday released Matthew Jones with immediate effect.

The once-capped Wales fly-half has joined Bristol’s bid for promotion from the English Championship.

Real news or just another work of fiction, who knows.

Another strong sign of where the Dragons are heading - absolutely nowhere. It comes down to the coaching. Jason has gone backwards under the current regime that chops and changes the line up every week. So much so that no patterns or continuity is allowed to develop. I am sorry but this is a judgement upon Darren Edwards' short but poor track record. He can't see that a team must have a strong and stable scrummage to allow its back line to play rugby. Don't be surprised if there are more similar announcements in the pipeline.

I dont blame him, the way things are going. New coaching etc hasnt been benficial to the team this year, somethings happeneing and players are not happy.
MD gone
Charteris- going
brew- going
tovey- going
For me changes that have been made have not made a difference DE bringing mediocre/old players in that havnt made the grade.

Darren Edwards coaching is not the point - or are you seriously suggesting that Little and Large at the Blues are world class coaches?

The tragedy is - why aren't Cardiff developing their own?
It seems whenever Cardiff, Ospreys are not developing their own they come to the Dragons and take their pick.
We didn't mind them having Ceri cos he's not that good
The Dragons are just a feeder team, like a Connaught

This story mau or may not be true. There is nothing on this subject on the Dragons website, no denial or conformation, that may lead to an admission that he is going some time later today, who knows is keeping quiet. This may be just a barganing thing we have to wait and see. If he does go it will show that he is simply being greedy and shows no care for his home region which seems to be the thing in Rugby these days. Lets hope it is simply newspaper talk.

has anyone considered the dragons may not want to keep him??? dont think you can blame the coaches for his performances this season, always on the floor injured, shakes his head when asked by captain to kick goals, kicking percentage is low, and general running and tackling really poor!!! i for one wont be sad to see him go as he doesnt look interested and if he thinks the grass is greener at cardiff carry on!!

i must agree the coaching from top to the bottom is very poor.
could be brew next?

it comes down to it we are not utilise our players well enough, dragons may have to face up to the point that they are a development team and a team for players to retire too.

Brew will be next, tovey, steve jones, lydiate, matyn thomas etc etc will all be next to go if nothing changes.

Don't really want Jas to leave, and of course he would be leaving because of the money, its his job after all, if you were offered a promotion are you telling me you would turn it down? Simply Heineken cup rugby, a team with go forward and lets be honest doesn't stand a chance at Wales if at dragons. Yes few forwards have stepped up but harder for backs when don't get ball for games on end and ball gets turned over after one move because cant ruck, maul, line out or scrum!

If true, can anyone blame him? Why would he stay at a team which currently shows no potential for anything other than getting beat more often than not? That said he has hardly performed well this season, his kicking has been dreadful. Any player with any ambition or a degree of ability will, at the moment see no future at The Dragons, sad state of affairs really?

love this

"The Blues have struggled at fly-half since the departure of Nicky Robinson with Sweeney, Australian import Sam Norton-Knight and Scotland’s Dan Parks, who is out of contract this summer, all failing to convince."

so Tovey is the man and has all the skills and attributes the above do not have.

Now the next paragraph

"The Dragons were already in the market for an experienced number 10 and that hunt will now intensify"

Isn't this what the Blues just did and end up getting Tovey

2+2 isn't equalling 4 here folks.

Always said Tovey should be a shoe in as 10 for Wales - he seems to have gone off the boil. Maybe the move will help that.

Good luck nipper.

Looks to me like we are missing the boat. Facility wise Dragons are deficient in the area where players look at when signing a contract. Top players gravitate to organizations that seem to be evolving with infrastructures that will help them in achieveing an individual goal which is to become a better player.

Coaching is not the issue, but the Mgt and committees are. The people scurrying behind the curtain need to be called out.

Organizations who are not professional in mgt are doomed for failure, but the coach is the front man and always gets the blame as he is most out front. Last year it was Turner, now Edwards....really?

Sadragon - top players gravitate to where they can win things / secure the best deal for them & their family, Dragons offer neither at the moment. Sorry but coaching IS the issue, DE has not moved the region forward one inch since taking over, in professional sport that is simply not good enough. Yes there are problems in the overall management of the club but his responsibility is to deliver on the pitch, he has had some decent players to work with but has, for whatever reason failed to get them to perform. He needs to be replaced.

As far as i see it The coach has got to be made accountable for the on field performances which have been well below what we supporters expected of the dragons this year. Tovey has not been as good as he potential last year promised and DE should be getting more out of him. Tovey has gone from wales prospect to average regional player under DE. I agree with Doberman1 it is time for DE to move on. Dobnerman1 I have a good steak waiting for you.

Chickens coming home to roost.......yet again. It's the result of a superclub being formed under the guise of a region........thinki
ng they can fool valley folk into supporting a revamped Newport RFC. It has failed off the field and now is failing (again) on the field. Honesty is always the best policy.

Yeah.......minority of one plus 20,000 non-attending valley supporters who could have saved the region if it had been formed correctly in the first place.

All teams are 'feeder' teams!!! What do you mean by 'developing their own'? Thirty three of the Dragons squad of forty players were 'developed' by clubs and regions elsewhere before they came to Newport. That is the nature of the game these days. It is a free market and players will just go where there is an opening for them. Don't kid yourself that this is a Newport born-and-bred squad. It never has been. Even Ceri, who according to you is 'not that good', is a former Ponty boy. Money talks my friend and always has done. Who pays the piper.........and Newport lacks the clout to be at the top table largely because it was formed deceitfully at the beginning, alienated large swathes of valley supporters and as a result suffers terribly financially at the gate.

Where are these 20,000 then Daio?

NOT commenting on these threads.

NOT attending club rugby matches this past weekend.

33 of the Dragons developed outside of Gwent lol priceless.

By your own logic, these 20,000 don't support their 'own', as you put it in your little fantasy world majority of one. I've been to Dragons matches this season - our worst to date - in the company of more 'Valley Folk' than have ever responded to your tripe on here!

Dai the Milk says...

33 out of 40. Fact.

The valley supporters have lost interest in the game and who can blame them?
They don't support the Welsh side any more, as you yourself have commented on this forum. They leave that to the corporate, non-rugby people. Despite the fact they still provide the superclub set-ups with the players, they have turned away from the game since they became disenfranchised by stealth.

Not surprised he is leaving, that was always on the cards. Just surprised he’s going to Blue’s. Obviously someone had a word in his ear. Obviously not CS. He left for bigger things with Blues and ended up lower than a flea’s YKW! You sure your up to the task Mr T. You’ve shown it in spurts of 20 min here and there for the Dragons but that’s not good enough. I said on this site only a week ago that Lewis Robling is the next in line No.10 at Dragons and there’s even more to follow. Shame to see you go Mr T but we all know its for the money. Your legs and lungs are going to burn more down there than they ever have at the Dragons. They wont put up with your laziness down there and other people running you life. So more fool you, if you think you have a better chance of the welsh team from there. Good Luck!!

Dont forget the Newport supporters who also don't attend. The dragons have managed to alienate more rugby supporters within the region by sitting on the fence rather than making a clear decision on whether it is a region or Newport standalone.

Agreed. It's almost a standalone........ju
st not quite....certainly not enough to convince the Newport supporters and definitely the concept has not won over the valley supporters despite the few deluded ones who attend.

Dai the Milk says...

.....and by sitting on the fence they neither satisfy the valley fans who want a true region nor the Newport fans who want a standalone club. By their duplicity, the powers that be think they can con both sets of supporters but their con-trick has failed, on the field, off the field but especially at the turnstile where successful set-ups like Leicester, Leinster, Munster and the French have such a head start on us. The same applies to all the other 'regions' too mind. As Abe Lincoln once said......'You may fool all of the people some of the time. You can even fool some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.'
