Author to sign copies of All Blacks triumph book

FORMER Newport RFC historian and author Steve Lewis will be signing copies of his latest work, All Black and Amber: 1963 and a Game of Rugby this Saturday at Cwmbran’s WH Smith (between 11am and 12pm) and Newport’s Waterstones (between 1pm and 3pm).

Published by Y Lolfa, it is the definitive account the Black and Ambers’ stunning and historic 3-0 victory in 1963 over Wilson Whineray’s mighty New Zealand, the decisive score being centre John 'Dick' Uzzell's first half drop goal.

On October 30 this year, the club celebrated the 50th anniversary of that memorable triumph with the 13 surviving players coming together for a special dinner to commemorate that wet Wednesday at Rodney Parade that will forever be part of Welsh rugby folklore.

It was the only defeat the late, great Whineray’s side suffered on a four-month, 36-match tour of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and finally Canada.

The All Blacks side who were beaten that day included legendary figures like Colin Meads, Don Clarke, Brian Lochore, Waka Nathan and Kel Tremain.

Lifelong fan Lewis’ well-written book is full of lovely anecdotes that make this a great Christmas present not only for the Rodney Parade faithful but lovers of rugby of all colours.
