DAVID Moffett is pledging a "full, frank and open discussion" when he hosts a debate at Blackwood RFC as part of his bid to return to the helm of the Welsh Rugby Union.

The former WRU chief executive has returned from New Zealand and expressed a desire to become chairman of the governing body.

He has pledged that he could sort out the spat between the four regions and the WRU over competitions and funding in 10 days but believes the problems facing the sport in this country run much deeper.

Moffett has organised a debate in each of the four regions plus north Wales in a bid to find out the views of those that are at the coalface of Welsh club rugby.

The first of those is at Blackwood's Glan-yr-Afon Park next Wednesday and he has pledged that all present will get their say.

"My aim is to do something that's not done enough, which is to engage at a meaningful level with the grassroots of rugby," said Moffett, who also had a short spell as the chief executive of Regional Rugby Wales.

"I want a full, frank and open discussion about the future of Welsh rugby – regardless of whether people agree or disagree with me, like or dislike me.

"It all starts with the clubs, as they are the Welsh Rugby Union, and I hope to provide them with a voice.

"There is a great deal of concern at the moment, not just for professional rugby but for club rugby.

"There is another restructure of the leagues coming next season – how can you plan for the future with that happening?

"The clubs are looking for stability, to ease the financial burden and for some real leadership."

The Blackwood debate starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is free and places are available on a first come, first served basis.
