BEN Parry intends to do Pontypool proud when he lines up for the Barbarians in Bath tomorrow evening, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 26-year-old hooker from Tranch has been named in the squad for the clash against the the Combined Services XV at the Rec (kick-off 7.30pm).

Parry, a self-employed bricklayer, will follow greats Bobby Windsor, Graham Price, Charlie Faulkner, Jeff Squire, Eddie Butler, Terry Cobner, Ray Prosser and David Bishop in donning the invitational side’s famous black and white hooped jersey, black shorts – and Pontypool socks.

“Every time that we put the Pontypool shirt on we think of the players in the club’s history that have done it in the past,” said Parry.

“A lot of great players from the club have played for the Barbarians and it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to follow in their footsteps.

“So many people have put in hard work to get Pontypool back on the up and I appreciate that their efforts have helped to give me this chance.

“Opportunities like this don’t come around very often and I will give it my all.”

Parry’s selection came about by impressing Phil Davies, who is coaching the Baa Baas with old Scarlets teammate Nigel Davies, when the former Wales forward held some pre-season sessions at Pontypool Park.

He is joined in the squad by ex-Dragons lock Scott Morgan, who captains the side, along with a number of Welshmen.

Cardiff Blues fly-half Gareth Davies is included along with Wales sevens international Luke Treharne, Pontypridd’s Dafydd Lockyer, Aberavon’s Ian Moore, Cardiff’s Jonathan Edwards, Swansea’s Nicky Thomas and Harri Evans, Andy Baston and Bryn Williams of RGC 1404.
