ANGUS O'Brien will make his Bedwas debut as the men from Bridge Field attempt to make it a perfect start to the Principality Premiership on the road to Aberavon, writes Chris Kirwan.

Steve Law's side started the campaign in stunning fashion, winning 28-24 against Carmarthen Quins out west.

The head coach selects O'Brien for Saturday's trip to the Talbot Athletic Ground with the 20-year-old Dragons fly-half, who played for Cross Keys last weekend, slotting in at full-back and James Dixon getting the nod at 10 to allow vice-captain Richard Powell to rest a niggle that he played with last week.

It was a challenging off-season for Bedwas with captain Phill Rees leaving for big-spending SSE Swalec Championship promotion hopefuls Merthyr despite being under contract while they also had to fill the void left by influential pair Simon Grainger and Arron Pinches, the former moving to Merthyr on good terms and the latter earning a contract with Moseley.

However, Law was delighted with his team's opener and is looking for them to build on that triumph against a Wizards side that enjoyed a 26-12 home triumph against Cardiff.

"It was a great start and we thoroughly deserved our win," he said. "We've had a poor summer in some ways so we have our reservations but the boys stepped in for those that have left.

"Lock Geraint Edmunds made the leap from the Championship, Matthew Screech was excellent alongside him in the second row, number eight Sam Feehan was the glue while Connor Edwards made a break that (fellow Dragons academy prospect) George Gasson finished off but it was a real team effort.

"We go to Aberavon buoyant but we don't take anything for granted because they had a good themselves. It's a tough place to go but we are confident.

"They have a good set piece and rush defence so patience and accuracy will be key. We've got the personnel to trouble them but it's just about getting the fundamentals of rugby – possession and territory."

Screech continues in the second row while fellow Dragon Joe Davies comes in on the bench.
