NEWPORT Gwent Dragons Premiership Select aim to do the region proud again this weekend when they host Jersey in the British and Irish Cup.

Cross Keys’ Pandy Park is the venue for the side’s second pool game in the tournament after they kicked off their campaign with a stunning bonus-point win away last Saturday.

A rampant Gwent side hammered Connacht Eagles 34-10 at a wind-swept Galway.

On Sunday (kick-off 3pm), they entertain Channel Islands outfit Jersey in an encounter broadcast live on S4C.

Coach Greg Woods is relishing the showdown and is a seasoned operator in the British and Irish Cup having steered his Cross Keys side to the 2012 final.

He said: “It’s going to be a great occasion, with the television cameras making it a bit more special, and it’s a really good idea to spread our games around the different grounds in Gwent (Bedwas and Ebbw Vale will also host group stage games).

“I love the British and Irish Cup and have great memories of the competition, with last weekend’s win in Connacht being one of the highlights. To get that bonus-point win in Ireland was a great achievement.

“I was so impressed with the way the boys from the different clubs bonded and played for each other.”

“It showed the Gwent region in a great light and we’ll be aiming to repeat that on the weekend.

“I told the squad after Saturday that there’s no point in winning your away games without following it up at home.

“This gives us the opportunity to take charge of the pool, but we have to match the intensity and commitment we showed last week.

It really is a must-win encounter for us.”

Jersey went agonisingly close to winning their opening pool match last weekend but were held 22-22 at home by Doncaster Knights after missing a late penalty.

They have enjoyed a mixed start to their league campaign, winning four and losing five of their opening nine games.

And Woods believes his team will have to be at their best, particularly at set-piece, if they are to emerge victorious.

“We’ve been watching the footage of Jersey,” he said.

“They have a huge driving lineout and a big scrum game, a typical English Championship side in many ways, so we are expecting a real physical battle, a huge challenge up front.”
