COACH James Chapron knows Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership Select have no margin for error in their bid to be the last Welsh side standing in the British and Irish Cup.

The Dragons must beat Jersey, who are fifth in the English Championship, on their own turf on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 2.30pm), and then turn over Connacht Eagles in Ebbw Vale next weekend.

Academy manager Chapron's side are likely to have to settle for second place behind Doncaster Knights, who did the double over them in December, if they are to make the quarter-finals.

To achieve that, they need to overcome a Jersey side who are currently in the runners-up spot and have a strong record at their St Peter home.

With the S4C cameras heading to Eugene Cross Park on the final weekend, the Dragons want to still be alive when welcoming the Irish to Gwent.

"Nobody wants to play in a dead rubber in the last game of the group, that makes it hard for everyone to get motivated," said Chapron.

"We have got boys in the group for different reasons, they all have something to play for and after starting off really well in the tournament we don't want to leave with the Doncaster result (hammered 49-17 in Ystrad Mynach) hanging over us.

"If we go out despite four wins, so be it. All we can control is our performances and we need a minimum of eight points from these two games."

The Dragons took the spoils when the sides met at Cross Keys' Pandy Park in November but the manner of the success is sure to fire up Jersey.

The Channel Islanders bossed the second half and took a shot at goal in the closing stages only to miss and see a 27-23 lead turn into a 30-27 loss thanks to a length of the field move that was finished off by teenage fly-half Arwel Robson.

Chapron said: "Jersey will look back at that game and think they had enough territory and possession to win it, it was only a wonder try that snatched it away from them.

"It will be a big challenge for us up front because they are big and well organised while recent weather will probably lead to a tighter rather than an expansive game."

The visitors' pack will be bolstered by senior Dragons Hugh Gustafson, Rhys Buckley and Lloyd Fairbrother while Geraint Rhys Jones, Ross Wardle and Aled Brew are set to line up in the backs.

Three of the five group runners-up will go through to the last eight for an away tie. The Dragons are in third with 10, three points behind Jersey on 13 while the other four current runners-up are Munster A (15), Moseley (14), Cornish Pirates (13) and Bristol (10).
