REJUVENATED Newport made it three straight wins in the Principality Premiership after seeing off bottom side Swansea at a rain-lashed St Helen’s on Thursday evening, writes Carl Field.

Tries wing Jon Morris, full-back Geraint O’Driscoll and fly-half Matt O’Brien earned victory for the Black and Ambers, with O’Brien also adding booting two conversions and two penalties.

It continues their revival after a poor start to the season that saw them defeated six times in their opening seven matches, while this win backs up their narrow win at Neath and an excellent victory over Llandovery at Rodney Parade.

Craig Warlow men’s have now also won five of their last six games in all competitions having also recorded victories against Bedwas and Cross Keys in the Foster’s Challenge Cup.

The conditions made it difficult for both sides who cancelled each other out during the early exchanges.

The first points off the match came from the boot of O’Brien with his penalty putting the Black & Ambers into the lead on 27 minutes.

The first try of the evening then followed less than 27 minutes later as a move down the left sent wing Morris darting over in the corner, with O’Brien taking care of the extras.

That put the visitors 10-0 up and was a lead they took into half time after Swansea No.10 Rory Garrett missed a penalty opportunity just before the break.

The rain continued to pour after the break but Swansea came out and got themselves back in contention when No.8 Rory Gallagher piled over in the right corner, although the conversion was missed.

O’Brien’s second penalty on 50 minutes extended their lead to 13-5 and a minute later, they got their second try when O’Driscoll chipped and chased down the left wing and charged over although O’Brien’s attempted conversion was blown well wide as they led 18-5.

Another O’Brien attempt at the posts fell just short on 65 minutes, before O’Brien scored Newport’s third try under the posts four minutes from time which he also converted.

Swansea were awarded a late penalty try which Garrett converted.
