SCOTT Matthews is set to continue his comeback from a long-term ankle injury tomorrow when Cross Keys resume their Principality Premiership season against a wounded Llanelli side.

Back-rower Matthews, handed the Keys captaincy before the campaign started, returned to action from the bench last weekend after a 16-week lay-off caused by ruptured ligaments.

Having undergone an operation and the necessary rehabilitation, Matthews is now fighting fit and eager to make up for lost time.

Reclaiming his place in the starting XV is Matthews’ first priority, although he knows that isn’t going to be straightforward given the performances of Rhys Fitzgerald in recent weeks.

Fitzgerald played a starring role as Keys eased to a comfortable win at Glynneath in their previous outing – Matthews played the last 20 minutes or so of his team’s 49-3 cup success.

“I bought a new pair of boots before I got the injury and then stared at them for four-and-a-half months, so I’m glad to be back,” said Matthews.

“It’s a bit more frustrating for me this season than it would have been if the injury had happened in the past.

“I was handed the captaincy before the season started and was settling into the role nicely when I got injured.

“Darren Hughes stepped up to the plate and led the boys really well. Me, Darren and Greg Woods (head coach) had a chat and agreed that if I’m on the bench Darren will captain the team but I will captain the side if I start.

“First of all, I’ve got to try and get my place in the team back, and Rhys has done well while I’ve been away.”

He continued: “I’m the sort of player who wants to crack on now. I’m back in full training and feel really confident about things.”

Keys will spend the rest of the Premiership campaign in the competition’s second tier after missing out on a top-eight spot last month.

They return to league rugby tomorrow when Llanelli, smarting from their cup defeat by Pontypool, visit Pandy Park (kick-off 2.30pm).

“The aim has got to be to win the lower tier, and I think we are capable of that,” added Matthews.
