NEWPORT Gwent Dragons speedster Jared Rosser has been called up by Wales for the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens this weekend.

The promising Wales Under-20s winger, who is yet to make his regional debut, represented his country in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series events in Dubai and Cape Town.

He returns to a squad that features his regional teammate James Benjamin and the nationally-contracted Gwent duo of Sam Cross, from Brynmawr, and Ethan Davies, from Pontypool.

Cross is co-captain while Davies, who plays fly-half/full-back for Cross Keys in 15-a-side, is second in the Series points charts with 179 behind England's Tom Mitchell on 208. He is also Wales' leading try scorer on 13.

Wales have been given a daunting draw for the famous tournament with fixtures against Fiji, New Zealand and Japan in Pool C.

They won the Challenge Trophy in Vancouver last time out but will need to be at their very best to progress into the knockout stages of the Cup.

"The squad are focusing hard on recapturing the form they showed in Vancouver and Las Vegas," said head coach Gareth Williams.

"Our protocols and systems were pleasing in both tournaments, and this culminated in winning five of our six games in Vancouver and capturing our first piece of silverware this season.

"We have been working on small details that can make us that bit more efficient. We are ambitious about demonstrating our progress and development through achieving results at the highest level."

Wales play the Kiwis on Friday (12.32pm UK time) before Saturday fixtures against Fiji (6.12am) and Japan (9.48am). The knockout stages are on Sunday.
