BEDWAS may have partied hard last Saturday but the men from Bridge Field have switched back on this week to prepare for a huge home clash in their bid for the Principality Premiership play-offs, writes Chris Kirwan.

Steve Law’s men beat Carmarthen Quins last week to lift the Foster’s Challenge Cup and will be on the brink of a top-four berth if they win against Llandovery in Tier One tomorrow.

Bedwas currently sit third in the table with three wins from four and know that a success against the Drovers will put them on the brink of a surprise first play-off bid.

They came close in 2013 when beaten 43-21 by Llandovery in a humdinger at Bridge Field on the last day, the visitors snatching a win that saw them finish second while the hosts fell agonisingly to fourth (play-offs used to be for the top three).

Bedwas have had a super season but don’t want to waste the hard toil that has put them in a great position.

“The Challenge Cup win was very pleasing and the whole club enjoyed Saturday but we have three games left and have worked hard this week,” said Law.

“This is the second chance of getting in the play-offs and I’d say this is the biggest game for us since that Llandovery classic.

“One win will go a long way towards securing a place in the top four but we are emphasising that we want to finish as high as we can. We won’t rest on our laurels.”

Bedwas must cope without flanker George Lee – “he has been absolutely outstanding this season,” said Law – so Dragons academy prospect Nathan Hudd will slot into a back row featuring senior regional forwards James Thomas and Robson Blake.

Wing Pat Lewis will not feature after helping Cardiff University triumph in the Varsity match against their Swansea rivals at Principality Stadium but centre Ross Wardle is set to return after missing out against the Quins because of a tight hamstring.
