RON Davies, a stalwart of Newport RFC and the Dragons, has passed away.

Davies said his proudest rugby moment was scoring a try on debut for Newport Youth against Newport High School in 1949.

He played rugby with the RAF in 1951 and played for Newport extras on his return to Wales between 1953 and 1958.

Davies was a founder member of the Black and Ambers’ former players’ association.

Davies was a regular at Rodney Parade for both Newport and Dragons fixtures and assisted the media department on matchday, greeting the press with a smile and keeping a close eye on his programmes.

He passed away after fulfilling his duties as the Dragons ended their losing streak by beating Connacht last Friday night.

"Ron was a real Newport stalwart," said chairman Will Godfrey. "He was part and parcel of the club and will be sadly missed by all of us."
