Legend Windsor backs Wales for Championship triumph

WALES and Lions great Bobby Windsor feels Wales’ huge Six Nations decider with England will be decided in his old stomping ground – the front row.

Windsor, who won 28 caps for Wales, said: "Seven points, I think we can do it I really do.

"But I think our pack need to say to the English pack ‘we’re taking them on.’ "England’s game is based around that pack but as they used to say in Dad’s Army they don’t like it up 'em!

"I think we can get at them up front, I’m not sure Dan Cole is as solid as they say.

"No pack likes going backwards, it makes you as a forward feel like you’re running around with lead boots on and all you’re thinking is ‘please don’t drop the ball or knock it on because I don’t want another scrum’, whereas the side going forward at the scrum are buzzing.

"If we can get that platform we’ve got the backs to hurt them."

Windsor however said Gethin Jenkins wouldn’t have been his choice as Welsh captain and felt the Toulon loose-head needed to have a big game.

"He’s got to be the first Welsh captain in history who can’t get in his club side, isn’t he?" Windsor said.

"I personally would have gone for Alun Wynn Jones, I think he’s a fantastic player, a real leader.

"I think Gethin has a lot to prove to show he deserves his place ahead of Paul James, who I think is the guy in form.

"I think the English pack can be got at but he needs to focus on his job in the scrum first and not worry as much about things like his carrying. Do your job first and the other things will come."

And Windsor knows a thing or two about beating England.

The Iron Duke had a fantastic record against the men in white, winning four of the five tests he played against them and never tasting defeat to the English in Cardiff.

But he had the utmost respect for their forward power and spirit.

"People talk of English Oaks, don’t they, and they really were. When we went out to South Africa for the Lions tour some of the Welsh boys were homesick before we even got off the plane but the English...Great spirit, they just get on with the work. Mike Burton for example, that’s a guy you would go fighting tigers with.

"I always enjoyed playing the English. They were great battles."

His rallying cry to the Welsh team is: "Don’t think about stopping Grand Slams. We’re the Champions, go out there and stay champions."
