Newbridge look to lay Beddau bogey – Andrew Gibbs
NEWBRIDGE look to build on last week’s 23-20 Swalec Championship victory at home over Tata Steel and put together a winning streak as they head to bogey side Beddau on Saturday.
The club’s forwards coach Andrew Gibbs was delighted with their triumph at the Welfare Ground five days ago and believes it was a far more convincing win than the score suggests.
Newbridge aim to play their traditionl expansive style and the ex-Wales back rower was happy with the way his side executed their game plan.
“What was most pleasing was the intensity we displayed against a strong Tata Steel side who should finish in the top five or six,” Gibbs said.
“They are a big side with a powerful scrum but we got our tactics right and the last ten minutes were very comfortable for us.
“We were guilty of trying to force things a bit too much after we’d made clean line breaks, but I don’t want to be over critical.”
On Beddau, who beat Tondu 17-13 away last weekend, Gibbs added: “They are a bit of a bogey side for us and we haven’t beaten them away for a couple of years.
“It would be great if we could start a bit of a roll by beating them this weekend.”
Blackwood look to kick-start their season when they travel to bottom club, Swansea side Bonymaen.
The Glan-yr-Afon Park outfit have a bonus point after they lost out in a last-minute, heart-breaking 32-30 defeat away to Bridgend Athletic on the opening day of the season.
But they were overwhelmed by Llanharan 33-16 last week but will take heart after Bonymaen’s woeful campaign so far.
They have no points after being hammered at home 37-11 by Narberth a fortnight ago before being blitzed 41-5 by Cardiff Met.
Both Pontypool, in second place, and Ebbw Vale, third, are doing Gwent proud with two wins from two.
Pooler face a potentially tough trip away to Llanharan while the Steelmen entertain a Narberth side they should be more than capable of toppling.
Saturday’s Swalec Championship fixtures: Bargoed v Tata Steel, Beddau v Newbridge, Bonymaen v Blackwood, Bridgend Athletic v Tondu, Ebbw Vale v Narberth, Llanharan v Pontypool, RGC 1404 v Cardiff Met.
