WALES international Hallam Amos will return for Newport Gwent Dragons against the Ospreys and is poised to line up in midfield.

The 19-year-old has played all of his regional rugby in the back three since his 2011 debut and was capped on the wing against Tonga last season.

However, he came through the ranks as a centre and with the Dragons without Pat Leach (knee), Ashley Smith (foot) and Ross Wardle (knee), Amos is poised to battle for a starting spot in midfield with his fellow teenage backs Jack Dixon and Tyler Morgan.

Amos did not feature in pre-season and missed the 16-11 loss to Connacht last weekend after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in the summer, an injury that ruled him out of Wales' tour to South Africa.

That led to 17-year-old Barney Nightingale making his regional debut in the closing stages in Galway as a replacement for Dixon but the Newport High School student drops out this weekend.

With former Wales and Lions international Lee Byrne captaining the Dragons from full-back, Amos' versatility is set to be a virtue over the coming season.

"We need to get as many good players on the field as we possibly can and if that means someone is playing slightly out of position for a short period so be it," said director of rugby Lyn Jones.

"Hallam is an instinctive and natural ball player who can beat people; he has good footwork, strong hips and can break tackles."

Scrum-half Richie Rees is in contention for the matchday squad after recovering from a calf niggle but the Dragons are without wing Matthew Pewtner and full-back Geraint Rhys Jones, who have been released for Wales Sevens duty.
