ELLIOT Frewen's breathtaking performances for Newport Gwent Dragons earned him the man of the round trophy in the first leg of the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series and now he’s desperate to lay to rest the demons of 12 months ago.

Frewen was a constant thorn in the opposition's side as the Dragons narrowly pipped Scarlets to the title in the Welsh leg of the tournament at Cardiff Arms Park – rounding out his day with a try double in a 31-19 win over Cardiff Blues.

He will now lead his side into finals day at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday night and a quarter-final against Sale Sharks at 6pm.

The Dragons will be out to go one better than 12 months ago when, after finishing as runners-up in the Welsh leg, they lost 12-5 to Gloucester Rugby in the overall final.

Frewen could only watch from the sidelines after injury ruled him out of finals day but one year on, the Newport winger is adamant that both he and his team-mates are geared up for redemption.

"The Singha 7s is a great tournament and it's great to make it back to finals day,” he explained.

"We just missed out on winning the Welsh leg last year, so it's nice to go one step further this year.

"Finishing second in the Welsh leg last year was a huge incentive to go one better this year.

"For me personally it was nice to get through to finals day because I was injured, so missed out on it last year.

"We've gone one step further by winning the Welsh leg this year, so hopefully now we can go one step further and win the overall as well.

"The aim is definitely to lift the trophy – that was the aim heading into the Welsh leg and we want to do the same again.”

Frewen admits that facing English teams will make the day all the more special and is already dreaming of the opportunity to turn the tables on Gloucester in particular after last year's final loss.

"The Welsh-English rivalry adds a bit of an extra spark,” he added.

"Confidence is high in the dressing room – we have high hopes that we can pick up some silverware.”
