FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons fly-half Jason Tovey will miss the start of the season after suffering a wrist injury but is set to be back for a return to Rodney Parade with Edinburgh.

The 27-year-old from Risca suffered the blow in training last week and a scan revealed a small fracture. At this stage he does not need surgery with Edinburgh's medical team expecting an eight-week lay-off.

Tovey, the leading points scorer in the Dragons' history, moved to Scotland in March when it became clear he would not be offered a new contract in Newport.

The left-footer impressed, scoring 32 points in four Guinness Pro12 games, to earn a permanent deal.

When Tovey gets back to full fitness he will tussle for the 10 jersey with Scotland international and summer signing from Glasgow Duncan Weir, although the Welshman can also slot in at full-back.

With Vern Cotter's side playing a Test against Georgia on Saturday, November 26, Tovey is likely to pull the strings the following day when Edinburgh head to Newport.

He has played against the Dragons once before when he produced an excellent kicking performance from 15 in Cardiff Blues' 2012 derby win in the capital.
