FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons back row forward Netani Talei has retired because of a knee injury, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 34-year-old, who won 33 caps for Fiji, had been playing for Aviva Premiership side Harlequins after leaving Rodney Parade in 2014.

Strong-running Talei made 20 appearances for the Dragons in 2013/14 after signing from PRO12 rivals Edinburgh, memorably playing for his country against the Barbarians at Twickenham the afternoon after playing 80 minutes against Munster in a Friday night fixture at Rodney Parade.

However, he suffered a foot injury against the Ospreys at Judgement Day and was released in the autumn of 2014.

Talei battled back to fitness, living in Fleur-de-Lys and training in Aberbargoed, to earn a deal with the Quins.

He earned selection for the 2015 World Cup, his third, but another injury has forced the Fijian to hang up his boots after eight senior appearances for the Quins.

“After 17 months out of the game spent rehabbing and draining fluid from my knee, it was advised by a consultant that retirement is the best option for me,” said Talei.

“I would like to thank Harlequins for their patience and show my gratitude to the medical staff who have continually monitored my rehab and training.

“Now that the final whistle in my career has blown – after representing my country in both 7s and 15s, participating in three Rugby World Cups, and playing over 200 senior club rugby games – another challenge in life arises for me in the health and fitness industry.

“I have recently started fitness boot camps and one-to-one rugby skills fitness coaching and will now dedicate my time to helping people achieve their fitness and sporting goals, which I am really passionate and excited about.

“Rugby has made me the person I am today. I am forever grateful and will cherish every moment of it.”
